Beethro's Adventure

Main Menu

New Game/Continue -- Choosing this will begin a new game, if a game save is detected choosing continue will place you in the last room you were in during your last game. Note that the game saves automatically.

Options -- Adjust the game options

Enable Sound - Allows sound effects to play

Enable Running - Allows for the main character to move until a directional button is released. With running disabled each move is a discrete press and release of a directional button.

Clear Statistics - Clears out the in-game statistics.

Restore Level -- Allows you to replay any level you've already beaten, useful to lower your overall step statistic.

Help -- Shows in-game help scroll.

Statistics -- (found under the Menu button) This scroll keeps track of vital statistics including; turns per level, total turns, monster kills, kills using a mimic, and deaths. Note that turns are steps taken by the main character plus each rotation of the sword, thus to minimize steps you must use diagonal keys (q,e,z,c) and try to rotate your sword only when completely necessary. The statistics can be cleared through the options menu.

Playing the Game

Beethro's Adventure can best be described as a hybrid adventure/puzzle game. Your goal is to destroy all monsters in each room of each level of King Dugan's Dungeon. The game can be played using the d-pad and trackball however some puzzles require diagonal movement which is imprecise using the d-pad, so you should become accustomed to using the keyboard keys (a,w,d,x for left, up, right, down and q,e,z,c for diagonals) this will also help eliminate unnecessary steps to keep your total turns down.

Each room will present to you a unique puzzle with a specific goal, usually to kill all the monsters contained inside it. To kill a monster you simply put your sword on the same space as a monster. Note that Beethro always moves before monsters so as long as you move in a way that makes your sword where a monster is currently you will kill it.

Items

  • Scent Potion - This potion makes Beethro nearly scentless therefore monsters only notice him if you is very near to them.
  • Mimic Potion - This potion allows the player to place a mimic which will do exactly what Beethro does for the rest of the time he is in the room. Mimics can kill you if you are not careful.
  • Scrolls - These usually contain a helpful hint for the room, be sure to read them if you are stuck.
  • Save Point - When you come across an 'X' on the ground be sure to step over it, this will save your progress for that room for as long as you are in it. This way if you die you will restart to your last save point.
  • Switch Gate - Yellow gates can be lowered or raised when the correct switch is struck with a sword.
  • Local Monster Gate - Green gates will be lowered once all of the monsters in that room are killed.
  • Global Monster Gate - Blue gates will be lowered when every room in a level has been visited and cleared.
  • Falling Tile Gate - Red gates will be lowered when each falling tile in a room has been triggered to fall.

Monsters

  • Roach - Simplest enemy, always runs at you in a predictable way.
  • Queen Roach - Seeks corners to spawn roaches after a certain number of times....  ... it may be useful to determine the respawn cycle.
  • Roach Eggs - Just nip them in the bud.
  • Ants - Are these even in the game.... I haven't seen them... though they're probably not much smarter than roaches.
  • Tar - Though technically not a monster it is a source of a few... Tar features hardened corners so you can only destroy its flat sides.
  • Tar Baby - An unfortunate side-effect of tar, you just can't seem to get rid of them all. Luckily if you don't disturb tar, save for tar mothers, you shouldn't need to deal with them.
  • Tar Mother - The insidious eyes at the heart of some tar. Tar Mothers give normally lifeless tar special abilities it wouldn't normally have...
  • Eyeballs - They're always watching, as long as you aren't seen you should be okay.
  • Goblins - Even after creating their movement, I'm still not entirely sure how these devilish characters determine when to attack and when to flee... be careful going after groups of goblins.
